Admission Requirements
NCFC is open to serious flute students, ages 12-18. At least 2 years playing experience and enrollment in private lessons is required. Applicants should have an active interest in flute study. Private teachers may be contacted for referral. An audition tape is required with the application for admission and ensemble placement (see tape requirements, below). Returning 2000 students need not submit an audition tape.
Tape Requirements
A cassette tape (Redbook-compliant Audio CD's are also acceptable) of the highest possible recording quality must accompany the application. Your audition tape is a very important part of your camp experience, as admissions and placement decisions are made almost entirely from the tape. Please note the following instructions:
- ) Use the best possible recording equipment available to you (though professional equipment is not necessary). Consult with your teacher before and during recording. Try to get your tape to sound as good as possible.
- ) Record exactly two selections that offer contrast in style, periods, and tempo. Be sure to choose music that best demonstrates your abilities, and prepare the material thoroughly before recording. While the recording should reflect tonal, technical, and musical facility, do not record repertoire that is much too easy or too difficult. Do as many 'takes' as is necessary to get a good final outcome.
- ) Piano accompaniment is not required, but is permitted if you feel it will yield a better performance. Omit long rests in unaccompanied recordings.
- ) Be sure to label the tape itself and the J-card inside the case with your name and the repertoire you have recorded.
- ) Recorded media will not be returned. Applications can take up to four weeks to process. All tapes must be accompanied by an application and deposit check.
One movement equals one selection. Choose a total of two selections, using the following guide:
Sonatas and Concertos: One movement of a sonata or a concerto equals one selection.
Etudes: One etude equals one selection.
One-movement pieces (such as the Mozart Andante in C) equal one selection.
Collections: One movement of a work from a collection equals one selection.
Any Mozart concerto, or other classical concerto
Any work from the French or contemporary repertoire
An etude (Andersen, Cavally, etc.)
A work from a collection ("Solos for Flute", by Peck; "24 Short Concert Pieces", by Cavally; "Flute Music by French Composers", by Moyse, etc.)
If you are uncertain about the appropriateness of a selection, please contact us. Generally, anything in the classical flute repertoire is acceptable.
